The Huntoon-Van Rensalier Underground Railroad Memorial Site Foundation was established in 2004 to protect, preserve, and commemorate, for future generations, the footprint, history and legacy of the Huntoon-Van Rensalier Underground Railroad through civic improvements, programs and fundraising. In the mid-1800s, Josiah Huntoon and William Van Rensalier, white and black together, were not only abolitionists helping escaped slaves, they also broke racial barriers by living in the same neighborhood and being close friends all their lives. They both showed us all how to live our entire lives with unswayable devotion to friendship beyond race. Huntoon and Van Rensalier personified the words “The Soul Has No Color”.

For generations, the Huntoon-Van Rensalier site has been a source of pride for the Paterson community. Oral traditon coined the site “Huntoon’s Corner” long before it faced demolition by a fast food corporation. The community rallied to preserve its history and in 1994 the journey to national recognition as an historic Underground Railroad site began.
